The Amtrak Senior DiscountAmtrak Senior Discount

There is nothing like watching America unfold past your window as the clickety-clack of the wheels on the rails forms a background rhythm. Seeing the country by train is a special treat. You can get up and move around any time you want and it won’t slow down the progress of the trip. You can go to the dining car or the observation car or even get something in the snack bar. So, how do you spot a good deal and a great discount on Amtrak?

Tell them you’re a senior

Fifteen percent off is a very good deal and Amtrak offers this to anyone who is 62 or older on the lowest priced fare available. This means that you don’t travel in the lap of luxury, but even coach is pretty nice. You may have to show identification when you buy the ticket or on the train. If you take Business class, First class or sleeping accommodations, the discount unfortunately doesn’t apply and you will have to pay the regular fare. The senior discount isn’t available on all train routes and some restrictions apply, but it’s a pretty good deal if you can get it. Handicapped passengers and one companion, regardless of ages, also get a fifteen percent discount on tickets.

Going to Canada? That’s an easy 10% off for seniors

If you plan to use the train to cross the border into Canada, then a ten percent discount applies to anyone over 60. Or take ten percent off your train tickets by showing your AAA card with no age restrictions. If someone in your party isn’t yet the magic age of 60, look into membership in the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) and get the same discount if you purchase at least three days in advance.

Ready to book? Confused about the fares?

Amtrak’s special fares, discounts and promotions can leave you with your head spinning. Then add on blackout dates and conditions. It’s pretty overwhelming. This site offers more information on discounts and promotion codes. Promotion codes cannot be combined with any other discount, so if there is a promo code, it might be a better deal. Also keep in mind that most routes on Amtrak give a 20% discount if you book at least seven days in advance. This has no relation to age, but with age one learns to plan ahead.
