9 Amazing International Trips for Seniors

The world is huge. No list of nine destinations will cover all the places on this world worth visiting. Therefore, there’s absolutely no way to avoid leaving off people’s personal favorites on this list.

Disclaimer aside, we wanted to highlight some of the most amazing worldwide travel destinations for seniors in the hopes of inspiring some of you to get out there and travel.

Since everyone has different priorities when it comes to their travel choices, we’ve got our top international destinations divided into three categories. Take your pick(s) and have the time(s) of your life.

Cultural Cities

1. Florence, Italy

Once home of the Medici and still home to a truly astounding amount of world-class art and architecture, Florence packs a massive historical punch in any visit you take. The food and wine are also pretty amazing.

2. Bangkok, Thailand

You’ll get a grand dose of Thai culture with a trip to Bangkok. There are hundreds of traditional temples that visitors can see, and art dating back centuries in the city’s National Museum. You can time your visit to take part in one of the city’s many fairs and festivals, or take in some local dancing and theatre any time of year.

3. Cairo, Egypt

As the center of one of the oldest human civilizations in the world, Cairo amassed an impressive number of cultural sights. Prime attractions include: the pyramids, the sphinx, ancient mosques and the amazing collection of historical items in the Egyptian Museum. Not bad.

Amazing Sights

4. Iguazu Falls

Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, the Iguazu Falls are one of the most impressive natural sights in the world. I could say more, but the view says it better.

5. Great Wall of China

China’s great wall is an impressive display of one of the greatest feats of humankind. You can walk along the structure created by nearly 2,000 years of human labor and see expansive views of China along either side.

6. Machu Picchu

Another wonder of human invention (coupled with some gorgeous natural beauty), Peru’s Machu Picchu shows the astounding skill and scale of the ancient Inca Empire. If you’re feeling hearty enough, hike to the site on foot. If that sounds like a bit too much, there are regular trains from Cusco.

Relaxing Destinations

7. Maldives

If beautiful, clear water and white sand beaches are more your speed, consider the Maldives islands. That clear water can make for a great diving experience – or an equally great experience taking in the view on the beach with a drink.

8. Santorini Island, Greece

A visit to Santorini Island pretty much comes with delicious food, quality wine, great views of the ocean, and impressive architecture all guaranteed. You can see some of the ancient ruins on the island, have a wine tasting at a local winery, or spend some time enjoying the beach or bay.

9. Costa Rica

Another destination with plenty of beach options (notice a theme in this section?), Costa Rica has a lot of gorgeous natural views on display. Consider hikes, canopy tours, or – once again – just enjoying the views while you relax on the beach.

Obviously, we’ve left off about 1,000 great destinations for seniors. Feel free to tell us how wrong we are and how much <insert your favorite vacation spot here> should have been on the list. It’ll just give other readers that much more inspiration!
