Pet-Friendly Senior Living in Los Angeles

Pet-Friendly Senior Living in Los Angeles

You can’t swing a cat in Los Angeles without hitting a teacup dog in a starlet’s handbag, a snake owner strolling with his pet on the Venice Beach boardwalk, or Dog Whisperer fans in the park, training their dogs in the style of Cesar Millan. Angelenos take life with pets seriously, and that extends to senior living. There are more than 100 pet-friendly assisted living communities in Los Angeles, plenty of restaurants and shops that welcome dogs, and hundreds of boutiques and salons to pamper your pet.

Shopping with (and for) your pets in L.A.

L.A. offers some legendary shopping, and Rodeo Drive is a fun place to promenade with your pooch and check out the designer-boutique windows. Other L.A. shops cater exclusively to pets. DOG Pet Boutique in Beverly Grove stocks Chanel- and Marc Jacobs-inspired carriers, coats, sweaters, and swimwear for pampered pups. For premium foods and special diets, Lucky Pet in Koreatown is a popular destination. The independent shop stocks gourmet cat food and organic dog food to satisfy finicky eaters and pets on special diets.

When you’re hungry, LA Weekly recommends The Sycamore Kitchen on La Brea for breakfast and lunch and SQIRL on Virgil for great coffee and fresh donuts. Both eateries have patios that welcome your dog.

Play and learn around L.A.

Dogs can’t live on shopping and dining alone, of course. For room to run, visit one of Los Angeles’ off-leash dog parks. There aren’t many for a city the size of LA – nine in all – but some of them are big enough to make up for the small selection. Runyon Canyon Dog Park in the Griffith area boasts 90 acres of leash-free territory that includes hiking trails, hilltop views, and lots of canine social time.

Dog owners who’ve dreamed of having the Dog Whisperer solve their pet’s behavior issues can register for classes at the Training Cesar’s Way clinic in Santa Clarita. Pro trainers offer classes on walking to heel, agility, socialization, search and rescue, and more. Millan himself leads several 5-day fundamentals courses throughout the year.

Special events for pet owners and animal lovers

Los Angeles is also home to special events that bring pet lovers together for fun and friendly competition. The yearly Surf City Surf Dog in Huntington Beach features three days of hotdogging by pups who know how to shred the waves. Not to be outdone (but definitely out of the water) regional cat clubs host shows several times a year that feature dozens of breeds to admire. And bunny lovers celebrate “hoppy” holidays at the annual Los Angeles Rabbit Foundation Holiday Party, which raises money for adoptions and care classes.

Award-winning pet-friendly senior communities in L.A.

Among the many places that welcome pets are two SeniorAdvisor.com reviewer favorites. Atria Covina in the San Gabriel Valley and Belmont Village of Hollywood Heights both earned Best of 2015 awards based on reviews by residents, family members, and visitors. Other popular residences for seniors and their pets are the Metro at Chinatown and Andalucia Senior Apartments in Van Nuys. With options all over the metro area, there are plenty of places for you and your pet to call home.
