Mormon/LDS Senior Living in Phoenix

Mormon/LDS Senior Living in Phoenix

The Mormon Church has a long history in Arizona and its membership numbers are growing in the Phoenix area. In keeping with the area’s LDS traditions and growth, there are several Mormon-affiliated assisted living facilities in Phoenix and in nearby Mesa, which was founded by Mormon settlers in 1878. For seniors seeking an LDS community, the Phoenix-Mesa area also has much to offer in terms of worship, history, and support.

Phoenix licensed care homes in the LDS tradition

There are several licensed private care homes in the greater Phoenix area that are run by LDS families. Pleasant Living/Moroni House operates 2 assisted living homes in Mesa that feature round-the-clock staffers to handle resident needs, always on-call doctors and nurses, carefully designed single-level living spaces for easier mobility and reduced fall risks, and community activities including barbecues, visits from area LDS Relief Society members, regular exercise, and weekly music events.

Another LDS-owned option is Fairbrook Grove in Mesa, a small assisted living community run by a husband-and-wife team who provide live-in RN service, facility management, social and spiritual support, and hospice services. The home itself was custom designed to meet the needs of seniors with mobility and cognitive challenges, and its setting in a citrus grove offers a shady retreat from the surrounding desert.

Assisted living options in Phoenix and Mesa

Avista Senior Living, owned by an LDS church member and Harvard Business School graduate, runs assisted living communities in Mesa and Phoenix. Avista Senior Living North Mountain of Phoenix won the 2013 “Phoenix Magazine” Interior Design Award for its elegant and safety-minded design features. Avista North Mountain offers independent living apartments with full kitchens and housekeeping service, assisted living with round-the-clock caregivers available, a secure and specially designed Serenity Suites option for memory care patients, and respite-care apartments for short-term stays.

Avista’s other property, Avista Senior Living Historic Downtown Mesa, gives seniors the daily help they need in a location that makes it easy to stay active and social. The 92-unit complex features a dog park, a swimming pool, 24/7 staff availability, chef-prepared meals, and time-saving housekeeping services. Mesa’s Active Adult Center is just across the street from the complex, and Avista is less than three blocks from the Arizona Museum of Natural History.

Two temples in the greater Phoenix area

The new Phoenix Arizona Temple will be dedicated on November 16 after three years of construction. The 27,000-square foot temple sits on five acres in north Phoenix, just across the road from Adobe Dam Regional Park. The building will serve as a gathering place for LDS baptisms, weddings, and other special events, while the fully landscaped grounds will be open to visitors.

The LDS temple in Mesa hosts the world’s biggest outdoor Easter pageant over several days each spring. The performances are free to public and offered in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. Seating for patrons in wheelchairs is available at all performances. Visitors should plan to arrive early; seating is first-come, first-served.
